Making My Own Holiday Traditions

I am the youngest in my family, two of my sisters have families of their own, and we all live in different cities. This year while my parents dreading the idea that we wouldn’t be all together for Christmas it dawned on me – I might not have my own “family” but I can start to make my own Christmas traditions. I’ve been thinking all about the things I love and hate about Christmas, and I’ve come up with a list of holiday traditions I would like to start or continue as an adult on my own.

Christmas Brunch

I don’t know about you, but Christmas morning in my family has always been a little hectic. We’ve always started early with stockings and we’ve always skipped breakfast. Instead, I would love to have a slow, quiet morning. Starting with a relaxed coffee, and then a late brunch filled with my favourite breakfasts foods and a mimosa (virgin or otherwise).

Less Presents

Look, don’t get me wrong – I like getting presents. But I like the thought that people put into the gift more than anything. I so would so much rather get 1 present that someone thought that I would love, than a bunch of random things I asked for. I also hate making Christmas lists, if I want something I’ll buy it myself and if I know you bought me something I want it right away.

Christmas Eve

My family doesn’t have a lot of holiday traditions, but we do have one that I love. I don’t know how much longer we will stick to it as a whole family, as we are all so far apart and busy, but I am going to keep this one going myself.  You see, every Christmas Eve my family goes to Wendy’s. Yes, the fast food restaurant. We’ve done it for as long as I can remember, and I honestly don’t know why, but I love it. So whether I am on my own, with one or two family members, or in the future with my whomever’s, I would like to continue going to Wendy’s.

I’m also going to add in a Christmas eve movie night. My family never did the whole pj’s on Christmas Eve thing, but I think its such a cute tradition! I never buy real pyjamas and I think this is a great excuse to get myself a pair this year. So this Christmas Eve you’ll find me curled up in new PJ’s, with a belly full of fast food, watching The Grinch (or another of my favourite Christmas movies).

That’s my list so far, but I’m sure as I get older and life change my list will as well! What are some of your favourite traditions?
