5 Skills I’m Working On In 2018

5 Skills I’m Working On In 2018

Here are 5 skills I am working on in 2018!  I don’t have any specific goal or destination I would like to reach with these skills, I would just like to have a general sense of improvement with them. Most of these are continuing with me from 2017, and hopefully will continue with me into 2019 as well! Happy reading!

01: Sign Language

Since living in Italy I’ve realized how odd it is that I don’t know a second language. Being from Canada, I’ve grown up learning French, but I’ve never liked it. I also learned a little Italian, but I didn’t stick with it. American Sign Language has always been the language I’ve most wanted to know. I started by taking a class in 2015, but after that class, I never had a chance to use it and forgot most of what I had learned.  This time, I intend to keep up with my current skill level with practice and enroll in the next level in the spring.

02: Mindfulness

I’m beginning to recognise that real happiness isn’t something large and looming on the horizon ahead but something small, numerous and already here. The smile of someone you love. A decent breakfast. The warm sunset. Your little everyday joys all lined up in a row. – Beau Taplin

I’ve always had a vivid imagination, and I find it all too easy to get lost in a daydream. I don’t think there is anything wrong with that, but sometimes, often if I’m feeling unhappy in my own life, instead of dealing with the issues I tend to just retreat into my daydreams. This year, I’m going to consciously make a decision to practice mindfulness in my life. Living in the now, no matter what it is, and recognizing the joy that is currently in my life, and not just getting lost in the labyrinth of the future. I’ll probably be talking about this in a later post, as it is such a huge topic to just give a paragraph, so if you’d like to see that – let me know below!

03: Photography

I’ve always liked to take photos, but at some point (probably due to the fact I don’t own a camera) I started only using my iPhone. I’d like to move back towards using a digital SLR rather than my phone for photos. I’d also like to learn more about lighting, styling, and post editing, and I hope to improve my skill level in all of these categories. If you follow my blog, you will get to see most of the photos I’m taking here, or over on my Instagram.

04: Writing

After taking a gap year, and writing almost zero in that time, transiting back into school was really difficult. Thankfully, after some hard work, my essay skills greatly improved. They are actually one of the things I am most proud of from my time at university. Since I am once again taking time off, I would like to keep up the skill that I worked so hard on. Blogging is going to be my main source of writing, so although it is still something I do for fun, I am going to try and write a little more “professionally” as to keep working on my writing.

05: Self Care

Self-care, this concept could mean so many things, and self-care could be anything from simply taking a long hot bath to saying no to plans when you need a day to recharge emotionally. I am not very good at self-care. This year, I’d like to pay a little bit more attention to what my mind and body are asking of me so that I can in return be better for those around me. It is hard to be a kind, loving person when you don’t take care of yourself emotionally and physically to do so.

Those are just 5 of the things I am working on currently! What are some of the skills in your life you would like to improve?
